A 51-year-old woman had left eye discomfort, and was seen multiple times.
An ophthalmologist put her on tobramycin and steroids, but she still did not improve.
Eventually she was diagnosed with acanthamoeba keratitis at an academic center.
She had severe vision loss in her left eye.
The lawsuit has now reached a confidential settlement.
This is one of my favorite cases I’ve written because it deals with a rare and challenging diagnosis that might be seen initially by a generalist as well as easily missed by a specialist. I also have a soft spot for unusual infectious disease cases.
